What is the Science of Reading?

Updated: Apr 22

As a field, we know a lot about the science of reading. There is significant research that has converged and confirmed what does and doesn't work. Unfortunately, many myths and ineffective practices persist for various reasons.

A few friends and colleagues shared a podcast series with me that has gotten a lot of attention. They asked me what I thought of it, so I dove in to see. It's from an investigative journalist's perspective. By the time I reached the second episode, I could tell that it was spot on. It comes from someone who's outside the echo chamber of education, so to speak, whose goal was just to simply uncover what can be known about literacy education.

For you parents and teachers who are interested in better understanding evidence-based literacy practices and the history of why our field is where it is right now, this series is really good. I would recommend it to anyone as a crash course on how to understand what the science of reading is ... and why so many educators unfortunately ignore it or are unaware of it.
