Instructional Routines — Phonological Awareness & Phonics Guide
28 explicit, scripted routines for teaching phonological awareness and phonics — grounded in the Science of Reading and ready to use in any learning environment.
Designed by Dr. Steve Underwood, a nationally respected literacy leader with decades of experience, this spiral-bound reference guide gives teachers word-for-word procedures for the instructional routines that core reading programs too often describe only vaguely. Pick it up, open to a routine, and deliver it with fidelity — no prior memorization required.
What's Included:
28 fully scripted instructional routines (12 Word Recognition + 15 Phonological & Phonemic Awareness + 1 Vocabulary)
Clear teacher script (bold/italic) paired with plain-language stage directions
Consistent routine structure throughout — purpose, script, and examples on every page
Durable cardstock printing throughout — designed for daily front-of-room use
Spiral binding lays flat and rotates 360° for hands-free reference during instruction
Clear plastic front cover, hard black plastic rear cover
Ideal For:
K–3 Classroom Teachers | Home Educators | Interventionists | Teaching Students with Dyslexia | Structured Literacy & Science of Reading Programs
About the Design:
Each routine follows a consistent internal structure so teachers know exactly where to look — purpose, exact script, and examples — every time. The guide is program-agnostic by design: routines are written to be recognizable and usable alongside any core reading program, not tied to a specific publisher's scope and sequence.
Six routines are designed to be used directly with Sound Spelling Cards — particularly the Spelling: Sounds in Sequence routines. Use them with your own Sound Spelling Cards from your core program or match them with the Sound Spelling Cards we have created at Souslebois Press. The guide stands alone and does not require the cards, but the two products work together naturally.
